8.8 Public Funding and Support
Limited funding for public safety and the redirection of scarce resources to anti-terrorism efforts threaten hard won gains in public safety in Boston. Local law enforcement as well as related public safety efforts in other city and state agencies must be adequately funded. Safe and secure environments also require an investment in communities and at-risk youth. And, in a world made more insecure by the events of September 11th 2001, major resources are now needed to enhance Boston’s ability to respond to potential acts of terrorism.
All criminal justice agencies need to work harder to share resources and coordinate services, particularly in support of communities with the greatest need. The citizens of Boston must also assume a greater role in shaping decisions and implementing programs that affect the safety of their families and neighborhoods.
