8.2 Low Crime Rates in Boston

One of the most important attributes of a livable city is its capacity to prevent crime.  Crime rates influence the way people feel about the safety of their families and property.  To make a city safe, prevention, intervention and enforcement strategies that target the specific causes of crime are required, while public safety officials must be able to track and understand crime trends.

While the Boston Police Department (BPD) has state-of-the-art investigative techniques and tools to track crime and ensure enforcement, crime prevention also requires coordination among various agencies and services and an investment in populations that are likely to become victims or become involved in criminal activity. Giving residents access to up-to-date information on criminal activity is an important step towards making people part of the solution.
